Wallis Simpson, an American socialite, became entwined in British royal history when she met Edward, Prince of Wales, in 1931. Their affair led to the "abdication crisis" of 1936, when Edward, unable to marry Wallis due to her two divorces, chose to step down as king rather than live without her. Wallis became the Duchess of Windsor, but their life together was far from a fairytale. Although their love story seemed grand, it was filled with loneliness, isolation, and public scorn. Wallis once said, "You have no idea how hard it is to live out a great romance," capturing the complexity of her life with Edward.
