Movie Info Sheet

In 1936, Britain saw three kings in a single year, with the abdication of Edward VIII shaking the monarchy to its core. Edward’s desire to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson led to his abdication, making him the first British monarch to voluntarily relinquish the throne. His younger brother, George VI, ascended to the throne reluctantly, but he would prove to be a stabilizing figure. His reign, which began in crisis, would see the monarchy adapt to a changing world, particularly during the Second World War. The events of 1936 marked the end of the Victorian era and the start of the modern royal family.
