In 1936, Britain saw an unprecedented crisis when three kings reigned in one year. After the death of George V, his son, Edward VIII, ascended the throne, but his controversial relationship with Wallis Simpson, a divorcée, led to a scandal. Faced with a choice between the crown and his love, Edward abdicated, becoming the first British monarch to voluntarily give up the throne. Edward’s younger brother, George VI, unexpectedly became king. Though initially reluctant, George VI rose to the challenge, guiding the monarchy through World War II. The events of 1936 questioned the monarchy’s place in a changing world, but George VI’s reign restored faith in the crown.
