In 1936, King Edward VIII’s affair with Wallis Simpson, an American socialite and twice-divorced woman, sparked a constitutional crisis. Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, fearing blackmail and the King’s potential ties to fascists, decided to authorize surveillance on the monarch. Edward’s refusal to end the relationship with Simpson threatened to destabilize the British government, leading Baldwin to take drastic measures. The result was one of the most dramatic moments in British history: Edward VIII’s abdication in December 1936. His decision to give up the throne for love forever altered the monarchy. Edward and Wallis spent their lives in exile, and the monarchy was passed to his younger brother, George VI.
