The Dark History Of The Witch Trials

Movie Info Sheet

In the Middle Ages, magic, especially dark spells, became closely linked to royal women, who were often accused of using witchcraft to harm kings. Most people believed that poor, elderly women were witches, especially those with physical traits like sunken cheeks or a hairy lip, often thought to possess the “Evil Eye.” If they owned a cat, it was considered proof of witchcraft, as cats were believed to be a witch’s “familiar.” Many women were tortured with devices like thumb screws or heated leg irons to extract confessions. These confessions often led to their execution, usually by hanging or burning at the stake, a tragic result of medieval superstition.
