Edward VIII, born in 1894, became the Prince of Wales in 1911, but his reign as King was brief. When he ascended to the throne in 1936, he was preoccupied with marrying Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American woman. This scandalous relationship clashed with royal tradition and the expectations of the British government and the Church of England. Despite pressure to abandon the marriage, Edward refused. In December 1936, he became the first British monarch to voluntarily abdicate. His younger brother, George VI, took the throne, and Edward was given the title Duke of Windsor. He spent much of his life in exile, marrying Wallis and remaining controversial until his death in 1972.
