Movie Info Sheet

Princess Margaret, younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II, was profoundly affected by the death of her father, King George VI, in 1952. In the midst of her grief, she found solace in Group Captain Peter Townsend, a family friend with whom she fell in love. Despite their 16-year age difference, Peter divorced his wife in 1952 and proposed to Margaret. However, as Margaret was under 25, her sister, the Queen, had to consent to the marriage. Elizabeth, as Head of the Church of England, could not approve of the union, as the Church forbade remarriage of divorced persons. The couple’s love became a source of public fascination and media turmoil.
