Their rivalry was both personal and political, as many Catholics in England viewed Mary as their true queen. Mary’s capture and imprisonment in England led to her involvement in the Babington Plot, a Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Elizabeth. Fearing Mary's influence, Elizabeth reluctantly signed her death warrant, and Mary was executed in 1587. Her tragic end cemented her legacy as a queen whose life and death were defined by political and religious strife.
