Movie Info Sheet

Monarchy was the dominant form of government in Europe throughout the Middle Ages, and though republicanism began to rise in the Early Modern period, monarchy remained central through the 19th century. Following World War I, many monarchies were abolished, but twelve still exist in Europe today, including Spain. The Spanish monarchy, known as "La Corona" or "The Crown," is a constitutional institution with largely symbolic powers. The monarchy was restored after the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, and the 1978 Spanish constitution confirmed Spain’s status as a constitutional monarchy. Today, King Felipe VI represents continuity and national unity in Spain, though his role is ceremonial.
