Movie Info Sheet

The Yamato dynasty of Japan is the world’s oldest continuous hereditary monarchy, with its history spanning over 3,000 years. Its origins are rooted in legend, with Emperor Jimmu, believed to be a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu, ascending to the throne in 660 BCE. Over the centuries, the dynasty weathered political upheavals, including the rise of shoguns and the samurai class, often relegating emperors to symbolic roles. The Meiji Restoration in the 19th century restored imperial power, but after World War II, Emperor Hirohito’s role became ceremonial. Today, Emperor Naruhito, the 126th emperor, represents Japan’s enduring national identity and cultural continuity.
