Heir & Spare: Edward And George

60' Documentary UK
Movie Info Sheet

Heavy is the head that wears the crown, but even heavier is the burden of being the spare. Edward VIII, the gregarious, athletic elder brother, was the heir to the British throne but chose love over duty, abdicating in 1936 to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson. This dramatic decision thrust his younger brother, George VI, into power. George, a reserved man plagued by a stammer, was never meant to rule. Yet, through the turmoil of the Second World War, he became the steadfast monarch Britain needed. In the end, it was George, the quiet spare, who became king, while Edward, the charismatic heir, was exiled and forgotten.
