Queen Elizabeth I became one of the most powerful and influential monarchs in history. Born the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, her early life was filled with political intrigue and the constant threat of enemies seeking to undermine her reign. In a time when queens were expected to marry and rely on a king, Elizabeth defied convention and ruled alone, choosing not to marry. She became the "son" that Henry VIII had long desired but never expected. Under her rule, England flourished culturally, politically, and militarily, most famously with the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Elizabeth I's reign proved that a woman could rule without a king.
