King George VI never expected to be king. As the second son of King George V, he had always believed his older brother, Edward VIII, would inherit the throne. However, when Edward abdicated in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, George’s life changed forever. A shy, reserved man with a stammer, George was thrust into a role he wasn’t prepared for. Yet, with the support of his wife, Elizabeth, and the help of speech therapist Lionel Logue, George overcame his speech impediment and grew into a determined leader. Throughout World War II, George VI and Elizabeth became symbols of strength, laying the foundation for Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
