Edward VIII's reign lasted less than a year, but his abdication remains one of the most dramatic moments in royal history. In 1936, Edward chose to give up the British throne for Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée. Their relationship was considered scandalous, as Wallis was twice-divorced, making her an unsuitable match for the king according to the royal family and British society. Yet, Edward’s love for Wallis was unwavering, and he famously stated, "I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love." He became the Duke of Windsor after abdicating, and they married in 1937. Their love, though controversial, changed the course of royal history.
