Charles I: King On The Edge

Movie Info Sheet

King Charles I, the second Stuart king of England, was one of the most controversial figures in British history. He fiercely believed in the divine right of kings, leading to conflicts with Parliament over authority and governance. His refusal to share power contributed to the outbreak of the English Civil War (1642–1651), which ended with his defeat. In 1649, after a trial for high treason, Charles was executed by beheading—marking the first time a monarch was executed by his own people. His death led to the brief republican era under Oliver Cromwell, but the monarchy was restored in 1660 with the ascension of his son, Charles II.
